Gemma has physical and mental disabilities, which mean that she has a general interest in disability. Gemma is also a parent/carer of 2 disabled young people, who have dyspraxia, severe speech and language, learning disability (son) and asthma (daughter). As a result of this, she has been campaigning on disability issues since the late 1990s. Gemma has been vice chair of the East Empowerment Board and also on the Surrey Access Forum, secretary of the Reigate and Banstead Access Group and Acting Chair of the Mental Health/Learning Disability Sub Group for Surrey LINk. Gemma was elected as chair of RABDA – Reigate and Banstead Disability Action Group in 2011.
